Each year over 111,000 people in England & Wales have a stroke for
the first time. Stroke is the 3rd biggest killer and highest cause of
disability. One third of stroke victims are likely to die; one third
are likely to remain disabled, only one third are expected to recover**

Insurance
Companies are reporting significant increases in claims for Critical
Illness cover, and the payments they are making:
$ Scottish Provident report that
they paid out 93% of all critical illness claims assessments concluded
between January and June 2009 - an increase of six percentage points
on the first half of 2008. This is one of the highest percentages in
the industry.
Their new claims paid report reveals
that the total amount paid out to critical illness policyholders in
the first half of 2009 reached over £43million, with an average
payout of £74,207.
For the first half of this year,
they paid out almost £30million in cancer claims and over £3.7million
in claims for heart attacks. In addition, children's benefit continues
to be the fifth highest critical illness paid out on - further reinforcing
the importance of this additional cover, which is included at no extra
cost with thei critical illness plan.
